Ryder Cup format for golf trips
Two teams, match play, a point per match. Team formats come early and singles decide it.
The classic three-round schedule
| Round | Format | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Four-ball (best ball) match play | 1 per match |
| Day 2 | Scramble or alternate shot | 1 per match |
| Day 3 | Singles match play | 1 per match (or 2 to keep it alive) |
By group size
- 8 golfers (4 v 4): 2 team matches per round on days 1–2, then 4 singles. 8 points total. 4½ wins.
- 12 golfers (6 v 6): 3 team matches per round, then 6 singles. 12 points. 6½ wins.
- 16 golfers (8 v 8): 4 team matches per round, then 8 singles. 16 points. 8½ wins.
Handicaps
Singles: the higher handicap gets the full difference. Four-ball: everyone plays off the low man and gets 90% of the difference. Scramble: use a team allowance (for example 35% of the low + 15% of the high). Agree on it before the trip, not on the 1st tee.
FAQ
How does Ryder Cup scoring work on a golf trip?
Each match is worth 1 point: win = 1, tie (halved) = ½, loss = 0. Many groups award separate points for the front 9 and back 9 so more matches stay alive.
How many players do you need for a Ryder Cup golf trip?
Eight is the minimum that works well (4 v 4). Twelve and sixteen are ideal because they make three or four foursomes per round.
How do you pick Ryder Cup teams?
Name two captains (the two best handicaps or last year's winners) and run a snake draft the first night. It is usually the best hour of the trip.
